Hypericum densiflorum, also known as bushy St. John's wort, is a shade-tolerant upright shrub native to much of the Mid-Atlantic region of the US. Capable of growing anywhere from 2-7' tall and 3-6' wide, this showy shrub is an excellent choice for naturalizing in woodland edges and for use in borders and screens. Densely branching and covered in fine, lane-shaped leaves, Hypericum densiflorum is well-regarded for its showy clusters of vibrant, sunny yellow, star-like flowers, which bloom in mid to late summer.
Hypericum densiflorum can tolerate both full direct sun and part-sun conditions, and will grow best in dappled sunlight, but is not picky about soil consistency or moisture, tending to like things a bit on the drier side. Bushy St. John's wort is a great pick for ecological benefits, as its flowers provide nectar to a wide variety of pollinators, and its fruits are attractive to birds, but it's also a great pick for solution planting, and works great for erosion control, especially in locations where other erosion control planting suffer from too much drying out. Hypericum densiflorum can also be used to great effect as a foundation planting, with its easily maintained size and dense branching work well to cover unsightly outdoor fixtures.
