Ilex x 'Whoa Nellie' is a variegated golden holly that originated as a sport mutation of 'Nellie R. Stevens.' Growing to a mature size of 12-25' tall with a spread of 8-20' feet, 'Whoa Nellie' makes for an incredible evergreen specimen tree, with new growth that is bright gold, contrasting well with with dark emerald green inner foliage. In the Summer, 'Whoa Nellie' produces white to golden yellow, insignificant female flowers, which require a male pollinating pair to successfully pollinate.
When grown near a male pollinator, like 'Edward J. Stevens,' Ilex x 'Whoa Nellie' will produce a superb crop of bright red berries that last through fall and winter, attracting birds with a nutrition-packed food source. 'Whoa Nellie' grows best in moist, fertile, slightly acidic soils and presents the best color and fruit in full to part-sun conditions.
