Ilex opaca 'Satyr Hill' was chosen Holly of the Year in 2003 by the Holly Society of America. This American holly was found as a volunteer seedling and developed at McLean Nurseries in Towson by a native Marylander, Stewart McLean and was registered by the Holly Society in 1970. A cultivar with a ton of proud Maryland heritage, this tree is an excellent selection of any garden or landscape, but is especially fitting for Maryland properties.
Ilex opaca 'Satyr Hill' is known for its bright red, well-spaced berries that persist well through winter, adding to both its ornamental and ecological appeal, and each tree has a large, upright, pyramidal habit. As is evidenced by its berry production, the 'Satyr Hill' cultivar is an all-female cultivar, and requires a male holly somewhere close-by to produce a good berry set. Tree has large, glossy, wide-lobed leaves and grows up to 35' tall and 20' wide, she is a beauty! With its upright form, good height, and dense foliage, Ilex opaca 'Satyr Hill' is a great choice for border, screening, or specimen tree and is tolerant of clay and black walnut soils, deer damage, and some salt exposure.
