Cornus sanguinea (occasionally referred to incorrectly as Cornus stolonifera or Cornus sericea) Arctic Sun® dogwood is a showy, compact cultivar of bloodtwig dogwood, which is typically noted for its red stems and a large, suckering, upright habit. Most striking in the winter landscape, Arctic Sun® improves upon the showy red new growth of the parent species, and instead produces a stunning array of colors from yellow to red to orange to coral pink! A striking array of colors, perfect for fall and winter displays, plus a low-maintenance dwarf habit of just 3-4' tall and wide greatly improves upon the straight species, which can get to an 8-15' size and only produces red colors on new growth!
Cornus sanguinea Arctic Sun® tolerates a wide range of soil and light conditions, though it performs best and produces the brightest colors in full sun and with regular pruning of old branches. Although other dogwoods in the Arctic series from proven winners can tough out perpetually wet and heavy soils, this non-native bloodtwig cultivar much prefers well-draining soil, meaning it make work best for specimen or hedge planting rather than wetland or standing water mitigation.
