Aronia melanocarpa Low Scape Mound® is a unique, low-growing, cultivar of black chokeberry, that grows out and creeps along the ground instead of growing up: normally reaching a height of around six to eight feet tall, this dwarf, mounded cultivar instead grows to only 1-2' tall and 3-4' wide in a ground-covering habit. The Low Scape Mound® cultivar's, low-growing habit, ecological appeal, and ornamental flowers all serve to make it the perfect native shrub solution for groundcover and small space plantings, as well as on steep slopes, where it can help control erosion. In addition, since Aronia melanocarpa is relatively tolerant of wetter conditions, Low Scape Mound® works even better for erosion control around riverbanks, wetlands, or sloped run-off areas.
In the early to mid-spring, Low Scape Mound® produces hundreds of white flowers on its low-growing branches, adding a ton of ornamental appeal to the early vernal landscape; pollinated flowers in spring are followed by black-purple fruit in summer and intense red foliage in the fall, adding tons of multi-season appeal to even compact spaces. Regarded as one of the toughest and most durable landscaping shrubs, this chokeberry cultivar requires very little special care and, although it may not be entirely resistant to deer browsing, Low Scape Mound® is vigorous enough to bounce back frommost browsing damage quickly and easily. Just like the parent species, Low Scape Mound® black chokeberry's fruits are edible, but its berries are quite tart and astringent, making them a better choice to leave for the birds or for use in jams and jellies.
