Tiarella x 'Timbuktu' is a hybrid foamflower cultivar noted for its cut-leaf type foliage, similar to oakleaf or 'Sugar & Spice' tiarella, but leaves are marked with deep crimson or purple coloration on or near the veins and deeper cuts, having a telltale key or fig-leaf shape. As a Tiarella, 'Timbuktu' is low-growing and semi-evergreen, and produces profuse white and pink-tinged blooms.
Tiarella x 'Timbuktu' grows best in part to full-shade in moist, organically rich soils and forms small clumps up to a foot tall and one to two feet wide, spreading via runners to form a dense mat over time. Though foamflower is able to dry out on occasion in shaded areas, prolonged drought will cause leaves to suffer; in contrast, it should also not be left in areas with poorly draining, compacted soils, as those conditions may result in root-rot or heaving. Mid to late spring flowers are attractive to bumblebees and other pollinators, and the 'Timbuktu' cultivar's semi-evergreen foliage adds multi-season groundcover appeal with attractive red tints in the fall and winter.
