Vaccinium corymbosum 'Chandler' is a noteworthy cultivar of highbush blueberry, a bushy, upright shrub known and widely regarded for its tasty edible fruits, which are also prized by birds and wildlife. Among highbush blueberry cultivars, 'Chandler' is especially noted for its huge fruits, and is widely regarded as producing the largest blueberry fruits in the world! Typically producing mid- to late-season flowers, protecting fruit crops from frost damage, 'Chandler' is also noted for its super long ripening window, meaning not just heavy crops of fruit, but up to a month of fresh berries at a time! The 'Chandler' cultivar's larger size also means that plants will produce even larger crops of fruit as they mature.
Vaccinium corymbosum 'Chandler' grows to about 5-7' tall at maturity, producing white, bell-shaped flowers which are attractive to pollinators and butterflies in late May that begin ripening into medium-size edible berries around the end of June and beginning of July. Blueberry bushes like 'Chandler' make great additions to open yards as a source of free fruit, or as border and hedge plantings, where you can produce fruit en masse, and where fall colors of orange and red add multi-season interest. If utilizing blueberry bushes for fruit production, care should be taken to cover plants while fruit develops to avoid bird damage. In addition, blueberry bushes require multiple plants in close proximity to produce good crops of fruit, so we recommend planting 2-3 bushes with similar flowering times in the same area to result in good cross-pollination.
