Ficus carica 'White Madeira' (Fig) Unity Grown
Ficus carica 'White Madeira' is a unique Adriatic type fig noted for its small, bright green fruits with strawberry-jam like centers; 'White Madeira' is especially well-regarded among Adriatic figs for its delicious tastes and textures. Originally found in 2013, the fig originates from a collection of trees owned by a Greek man who stated the trees were given to him by a friend from the Madeira Islands. According to FigDatabase.com, "figs [are] extremely sweet, jammy, like dried date fruits with a sweet, ripened strawberry flavor." Figs are also stated to have crunchy seeds and a crisp, chewy skin lending to an excellent textural experience.
Ficus carica prefers full, intense sun and nutrient-rich, well-drained soil kept relatively moist throughout the spring and summer. As with many deciduous trees, figs require less water in fall and winter, more in the growing season. 'White Madeira' is among the latest ripening figs in our stock at the nursery, and absolutely requires a thick layer of mulch for protection in the fall and winter in order to ensure that fruits have enough time to ripen through the summer.
Note: While ripe fruits are delicious and completely safe for consumption, many of the tree's parts, including leaves and branches, contain a mildly toxic compound, so care should be taken to keep fig plants away from areas where they might be chewed on by pets. In addition, care should be taken when choosing a planting location for Ficus carica as fruits can result in reseeding, and trees perform best with a bit of maintenance through the year, especially with a heavy mulch layer through the fall and winter.
