Cornus florida is a native, flowering understory tree commonly referred to as flowering dogwood, and considered to be among the most spectacular flowering trees in United States at springtime. Growing to a mature size of 15-30' tall with a slightly wider canopy on average, flowering dogwood can be multi- or single-stemmed with a short trunk and horizontal branching. In the early spring, before the tree begins to leaf out, Cornus florida produces a profusion of long-lasting white-bracted flowers that completely blanket the tree's graceful branches. Once flowers set, they are followed by attractive green leaves and bright red fruits in summer that attract birds throughout the rest of the year.
Beyond attracting birds in fall and winter, flowering dogwood is also known for its fall foliage, with deep greens turning to vibrant reds and deep wine-purples. Fall foliage is best in brighter sun, but Cornus florida grows great in partial shade too, and may be best grown as an understory tree in sites with well-draining soils. While flowering dogwoods aren't too picky about soil type, they can be sensitive to strong winter winds and temperature swings. To protect from hot summers and icy winters, you can provide your Cornus florida with a 2-4" layer of mulch over the roots at the base of the tree to keep things moist and insulated.
