Tiarella x 'Timbuktu' is a hybrid foamflower cultivar noted for its cut-leaf type foliage, similar to oakleaf or 'Sugar & Spice' tiarella, but with leaves marked by deep crimson or purple coloration on or near the veins and deeper cuts, with resulting foliage having darker coloration on average and having an elongated fig-leaf or key shape. As a Tiarella, 'Timbuktu' is low-growing and semi-evergreen, and produces profuse white and pink-tinged blooms that are attractive to pollinators, especially bees.
Tiarella x 'Timbuktu' grows best in partial to full shade conditions in moist, well-draining, fertile soils and, though individual plants may only grown to 8-18" tall and wide, once established, 'Timbuktu' can spread via runners to form a dense colonial mat over time. Though foamflower is able to dry out on occasion in shaded areas, prolonged drought will cause leaves to suffer; on the opposite end of the spectrum, 'Timbuktu' foamflower should also not be left in areas with poorly draining, compacted soils, as those conditions may result in discoloration or root-rot. While lightly fragrant ,id to late spring flowers are attractive to bumblebees and other pollinators, the 'Timbuktu' cultivar's semi-evergreen foliage also adds multi-season groundcover appeal with attractive red tints in the fall and winter, making these shade plants an excellent choice for any shaded landscape
