Thymus serpyllum 'Magic Carpet' is a variety of creeping thyme, occasionally called carpet thyme or mother-of-thyme, a low-growing groundcover herb that is hardy enough and resistant enough to foot traffic to be used as a lawn substitute or filler in pathways. Similar to other varieties of thyme, creeping thyme is edible, with a minty, herbal flavor perfect for seasoning or teas. Pink-purple flowers in the summertime are also highly attractive to a number of pollinators.
Commonly used in a variety of culinary ways for its minty, herbal flavor profile, thyme is most popular in soups, roasted vegetables, and in compound herb butters; while other thymes are sought after for their flavor 'Magic Carpet' is sought after as a consistently attractive, consistently low-growing groundcover plant, with mature plants typically growing to only 4-6" tall or slightly higher when in bloom. Creeping thyme is perennial and hardy through USDA Zone 4, and with its compact habit, this herb will last through hot, dry summers, and cold, intense winters too.
