Hydrangea quercifolia 'Pee Wee' (Dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea)
Hydrangea quercifolia 'Pee Wee,' commonly known as 'Pee Wee' hydrangea, is an adorable dwarf oakleaf hydrangea cultivar, the smallest hydrangea in Unity's catalog, and a perfect choice for a variety of uses in the home garden. 'Pee Wee' matures to a very manageable size of just 3-4' tall (and occasionally on the smaller side of that range), with bright green attractive foliage, making it ideal for small spaces, low hedges, and large containers. Standing apart from the crowd, 'Pee Wee' has a slightly denser habit than other dwarf and semi-dwarf oakleaf varieties, meaning better upright stature and better ability to hold flowers during storms and high winds.
From early to mid-summer, this cultivar is noted for its striking cone-shaped flower panicles that emerge clean white and quickly mature to pink before fading to brown in the cooler months; flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, and 'Pee Wee' gains multi-season appeal with its dark wine red fall foliage. After fall foliage has come and gone, coarse mature stems exfoliate to reveal an attractive, cinnamon brown inner bark, which adds eye-catching appeal to the winter landscape, complimented further by any persistent dried flower heads. This cultivar performs best in fertile soil in full to part-sun areas, and its compact form works in smaller landscapes, low hedges, and even planted in containers; with year-round aesthetic appeal, 'Pee Wee' makes an excellent addition to any part of the landscape.
