‘Serratifolia’ is a cultivar of Japanese Aucuba (Aucuba japonica), a medium-sized evergreen shrub originally native to Japan and east Asia. The ‘Serratifolia’ cultivar is noted for its dark green glossy foliage with serrated margins; while most other aucubas have smooth leaves, these ‘Serratifolia’ leaves add a ton of extra texture to evergreen borders, privacy screens, foundation plantings, or shaped specimen shrubs. Aucuba japonica ‘Serratifolia’ typically grows to a mature size of 5-7’ tall and wide, and prefers partial to full shade, as full sun conditions can result in sun scorch. Dense foliage in a mounded, upright form, and resistance to heat, drought, dry shade, and deer damage makes ‘Serratifolia’ an especially good choice for medium-height privacy screens or plantings to help hide exterior conduits or air conditioning units.
As an all female cultivar, Aucuba japonica ‘Serratifolia’ will produce attractive red berries in the presence of a male pollinator, adding even more multi-season interest to the shrub’s neat, evergreen appearance. Whether berries are present or not, this aucuba will attract birds and wildlife which nest among its dense branches. Long-maintenance over time and attractive in the landscape, Aucuba japonica ‘Serratifolia’ makes for a beautiful addition to many locations around the home.
