Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis, also known as sweet box, is a low-growing variety of Sarcococca hookeriana that grows to only 12-24" tall. As a member of the boxwood family (Buxaceae), sweet box produces glossy, evergreen foliage that works well for shaded borders and low hedges, as well as erosion control on shaded slopes. Sweet box additionally draws its common name from its production of small, white, deeply fragrant flowers which bloom in the late winter and early spring, providing spring freshness to an otherwise dormant landscape, and providing nectar and pollen to a number of beneficial pollinators.
Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis grows best in moist, well-draining, fertile soils with some acidity, and works very well in part to full shade, as full sun may result in leaf scorching. Once established, this sweet box variety has good drought tolerance, and its low-growing behavior makes it less susceptible to cold damage as well, making it an excellent compact evergreen for use in the backyard.
