Agastache foeniculum, also called anise hyssop, is an upright, perennial wildflower that thrives in drought-prone areas and pollinator gardens. Native to dry flatland areas throughout northern North America, Agastache foeniculum performs well in both full sun and partial shade environments, as well as a variety of soil types, which makes it a great choice for a variety of garden environments. Although it works great for wildflower gardens, meadows, naturalized prairies, and herb gardens, anise hyssop also works well in drier part-shade woodland gardens, and with a semi compact height of only 2-4' tall, it works great for low border plantings and rock gardens too. Anise hyssop is a part of the mint family and, though not as aggressive as some of its relatives, may spread over time to form small masses up to 3' wide within only a few seasons.
With fragrant leaves and attractive light-purple flowers that bloom through the summer and into the early fall, anise hyssop is one of the best home garden choices for attracting and supporting native bees, as well as for adding color and a pleasant herbal aroma to the garden. Beyond its use as a nectar source for pollinators, Agastache foeniculum is also a host plant for several species of larval moth and butterfly, including the unique caterpillar of the Radcliffe's Dagger moth (Acronicta radcliffei).
Our Agastache foeniculum plugs are grown from seed here at Unity Church Hill Nursery.
