Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance' is a hybrid serviceberry cultivar that grows as a large shrub or small tree, typically up to 15-20' tall and wide. This serviceberry cultivar, also called autumn brilliance serviceberry or apple serviceberry, is easily grown in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, and though it is tolerant of a somewhat wide range of soils, it prefers moist, well-drained loams. The 'Autumn Brilliance' cultivar draws its name from its striking fall foliage.
Amelanchier x grandiflora is a natural occuring hybrid cultivar of two native serviceberry species, Amelanchier laevis (native to Maryland) and Amelanchier arborea (native to Maryland and the Eastern Shore), which has resulted in larger, more profuse white flowers in the spring than either of the parent species as well as better fruit set during the late spring and summer months. Flowers, fruit, and leaves add ornamental, ecological, and edible interest through multiple seasons, as pollinators are attracted to flowers, birds and small mammals are attracted to edible fruit (which can also be used in pies and jams), and fall colors are sure to impress with a fiery display of reds, oranges, and yellows.
