Amelanchier x grandiflora is a natural occuring hybrid cultivar of two native serviceberry species, Amelanchier laevis (native to Maryland) and Amelanchier arborea (native to Maryland and the Eastern Shore), which has resulted in larger, more profuse white flowers in the spring than either of the parent species as well as better fruit set during the late spring and summer months. The 'Autumn Brilliance' of the hybrid was selected and is noted for its especially striking fall foliage.
Growing as a large shrub or small tree, typically up to 15-20' tall and wide. Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance' is easily grown in average, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, and though it is tolerant of a wide range of soils, it prefers moist, well-drained loams. Flowers, fruit, and leaves add ornamental, ecological, and edible interest through multiple seasons, as pollinators are attracted to flowers in the early spring, birds and small mammals are attracted to edible fruit through the summer, and fall colors are sure to impress with a fiery display of reds, oranges, and yellows. As a bonus, Amelanchier x grandiflora still has all the host plant potential of its parent species, and acts as an excellent host for several species or larval moth and butterfly.
