Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus', similar to 'Ogon,' is a variegated cultivar of Acorus gramineus, a versatile perennial grass that grows well in a variety of conditions, so long as it's provided with a steady supply of water. The 'Variegatus' cultivar differs from 'Ogon' in the color of its variegation, taking on a creamy or buttery white color in contrast against the typical green foliage, rather than the golden yellow variegation of 'Ogon.'
Although Acorus gramineus produces flowers from spring to early summer on small,sedge-like spikes, flowers are insignificant and unremarkable. The true draw for 'Variegatus' is the additional splash of color that comes from the cultivar's natural variegation as well as the plant's fragrant foliage and ease of cultivation. Tolerance to wet soils and seasonal flooding, as well as a slow-spreading behavior makes Acorus gramineus a suitable ornamental ground cover for wet sites without posing the risk of becoming noxious or invasive, and a compact size of 6-12" tall and wide makes it an equally good pick for container plantings.
