Pyrus communis, commonly known as the European pear, is a domesticated fruit tree originally native to central and eastern Europe and western Asia. Adding a fruit tree to the backyard or garden has never been easier than with the addition of this espaliered pear tree, which adds multi-season appeal, and ease to the process of harvesting fruits.
This specimen is espaliered, artistically pruned and trained, onto a two-tiered trellis, which adds stylistic flair to the already appealing features of a fruit tree. Pyrus communis begins blooming in April and May, and blooms are attractive to butterflies and bees. Through late summer and early fall, European pear produces edible pomes, which in the straight species are relatively small, but tasty.
Pear trees can grow to large sizes, up to 40-50' tall, but espaliered trees can be easily pruned and maintained to keep them a more compact and manageable size of less than 10'.
