Prunus salicina 'Satsuma' is a cultivar of Japanese plum characterized by its dark red to purple skin and flesh, which is firm, juicy, and sweet, perfect for eating, cooking, canning, or turning into preserves.

'Satsuma' grows to 12-15' tall and wide, and produces fragrant white-pink flowers between in early to mid season, with fruit maturing by late June to July. 'Satsuma' relies on cross-pollination to produce fruit, it is recommended to plant this plum with another early to mid season plum variety, like 'Methley.' Other cultivars may be self-pollinating, but planting 'Satsuma' with a partner plant will result in more profuse fruit set for both trees. 'Satsuma' plum is a moderately heat tolerant variety, and requires around 300 hours of exposure to 40°F or lower temperatures through the winter to reach its full fruiting potential.

'Satsuma' plum does well in a variety of soil types, but excels in fertile, well-draining soil that's kept moist but not wet. Flowers are attractive to a variety of pollinators, butterflies produce offspring within trees, and fruits attract a variety of wildlife too! Adding Prunus salicina 'Satsuma' as a specimen tree is a great way to support the local ecosystem and all of your plum-loving friends and family too, since one tree can produce over 30 pounds of plums at maturity.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
