Panicum virgatum 'Purple Tears' is a medium-height cultivar of switchgrass, growing to between three and four feet tall, which is characterized by plumes of soft gray flowers which eventually turn to brilliant purple seed heads in the late summer and fall.

'Purple Tears' tolerates a wide range of moisture and soil types, so long as the ground is well draining, and its showy purple hues and upright structure through the winter will draw interest for much of the year.
