Paeonia lactiflora is a medium height peony, a shrubby perennial grown for its attractive green foliage and large, fragrant, showy flowers. Paeonia typically reach between three and four feet high at full maturity, though some cultivars are slightly shorter, and grow best in well-drained, fertile soils. Peonies are attractive to butterflies and are long-lived, deer- and rabbit-resistant, and easy to maintain throughout their active growth windows, only requiring dead-heading of expired blooms.

'Nippon Beauty' is a striking Japanese cultivar of Paeonia noted for its deep red flowers and its lighter red flower centers full of gold-tinged petaloids. Although other peony cultivars are chosen for their doubled flower petal, resulting in a layered, ruffled appearance, and their strong fragrance, 'Nippon Beauty' is beautiful in its simplicity, only mildly fragrant with a single layer of soft, rounded petals. Excellent choice for cut flowers, and long-lasting in vases if cut before full bloom.
