Paeonia lactiflora is a medium height peony, a shrubby perennial grown for its attractive green foliage and large, fragrant, showy flowers. Paeonia typically reach between three and four feet high at full maturity, though some cultivars are slightly shorter, and grow best in well-drained, fertile soils. Peonies are attractive to butterflies and are long-lived, deer- and rabbit-resistant, and easy to maintain throughout their active growth windows, only requiring dead-heading of expired blooms.
'Coral Sunset' was originally introduced as a cultivar in 1965 and is named for its striking, uncommon hues, of deep coral and sunset pinks, which eventually fade to pink-tinged ivory as the season goes on. Blooms are semi- to fully-double and bloom for 7 to 10 days in early June, making for impressive cut flowers and attracting all sorts of butterflies.
