Helenium autumnale 'Helena Red Shades' is a red-toned cultivar of sneezeweed, an upright, clump-forming perennial wildflower native to moist areas along bodies of water, wet disturbed areas like ditches and roadside pools, and low-lying meadows. Growing to three to four feet tall in areas with full sun and well-drained fertile soils, sneezeweed produces profuse daisy-like blooms from late summer into the autumn; flowers are similar in shape to those of the parent species, but instead of yellow flowers, 'Helena Red Shades' produces strikingly beautiful brick red to maroon flowers tinged and tipped in golden yellow.
Best planted in rain or pollinator gardens and naturalized meadows, Helenium autumnale is generally avoided by deer, and is tolerant of wet soils, though it prefers better drained soils than its parent species.
