Spring Flurry® is a cultivar of Amelanchier laevis, also called Allegheny serviceberry noted for its early and short-lived but exceptionally showy spring bloom. Allegheny serviceberry, is a small, deciduous tree or large shrub which is native to thickets, open woods, and forest understories and edges in eastern North America, and though typical Allegheny serviceberry may only reach heights of 25' tall, Spring Flurry® may reach heights of up to 30-35' tall.

Like the straight species, Spring Flurry® produces showy, slightly fragrant, white flowers in the spring before the plant's leaves emerge, but compared to the typical serviceberry, Spring Flurry® is more like a snow storm of beautiful white blossoms. In mid spring, leaves begin emerging as a coppery-bronze tinted green, and eventually turn to gross green in the summer and striking orange in the fall.

Pollinated serviceberry flowers turn to small blue-black berryes in late spring, which are commonly used in jams and pies, but are also highly valued by songbirds and small mammals. Somewhat sensitive to drought, Spring Flurry® prefers moist, acidic, well-drained loamy soils, but will tolerate a range of soil types. Amelanchier laevis has wide tolerance of light, and can be used in the home garden in a variety of ways for both ornamental and ecological value.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
