Viola walteri 'Silver Gem' (Prostrate Blue Violet)
Viola walteri 'Silver Gem,' is a cultivar prostrate blue violet, a low-growing violet cultivar with blue-green leaves and beautiful small violet flowers in the late spring and early summer, the 'Silver Gem' cultivar improves upon the straight species with its silvery-hued leaves, adding even more striking color to the shade landscape.
Performing best in part shade or dappled sunlight, as is found in woodland gardens, Viola walteri 'Silver Gem' is a short, spreading groundcover, growing to only three to five inches tall and spreading up to 10-15" wide without becoming aggressive. Violet flowers are especially attractive to butterflies, and the plant's silvery leaves are resistant to deer and rabbit damage, as well as drought once established. 'Silver Gem' will grow best in locations with well-drained, medium to dry soils, and does well with some alkalinity to the soil.
