Magnolia virginiana (Sweet Bay Magnolia) is a small, native, deciduous to semi-evergreen flowering tree that thrives in wet, partially shaded areas. Sweet bay magnolia matures to 10-20' tall and wide, though in warmer areas further south, it can get much larger.
From mid spring to mid summer, Magnolia virginiana produces creamy white flowers with a lemony fragrance, which are followed by strange-looking fruit pods with red seeds in the late summer that are attractive to birds. Sweet bay magnolia makes for a wonderful choice as a specimen tree or for use in a rain garden.
This Magnolia virginiana selection was grown from the ground up here at Unity Church Hill Nursery!
